ABOUT BIATHLON"Did you know the word biathlon is of Greek origin and means “two tests”? This of course refers to the combination of skiing and shooting which dates back over 4000 years through the tradition of hunting while travelling on skis in pursuit of game. Historians also cite military references with descriptions of battles between warriors on skis. Gradually, the techniques needed for survival and combat developed into contests of skill. What could have been a more natural competition between the hunters in the Scandinavian forests, than that of marksmanship and cross-country skiing?" - Biathlon Canada www.biathloncanada.ca

Winter Training - Saturday 8:00am - 4:00pm + travel time |
The biathlon team meets to train as a team once every week. The team trains Saturday mornings in September and October. Full-day Saturday practices are from November until March. Biathletes are expected to train 3-5 days at home to continually improve their fitness and shooting ability. The biathlon season consists of three progressive competitions: Areas, Regionals, & Nationals. Additionally, the team also competes in some Biathlon Ontario events on the civilian circuit, such as the Snickers Challenge and the Air Rifle O'Cup. All equipment is provided, no experience is necessary.
|
Team tryouts and training officially begin in September of each year, however a summer training program is provided in the spring to those cadets interested in joining the team so they are physically prepared by September. ANY cadet can tryout for the team regardless of physical fitness or marksmanship ability.
Composition of final team is usually:
Junior cadets who make the team have typically earned a First- or Second-class Marksmanship badge and have earned at least Silver level fitness. Senior cadets who typically make the team are Expert or Distinguished Marksman, and have earned Gold or Excellence on the Fitness Test. This varies each year and cadets are NOT EXPECTED to know how to ski or shoot - WE WILL TEACH YOU! There is also opportunity for senior cadets to participate in biathlon as a cadet coach or cadet official. Both cadet coaches and officials have the opportunity to be selected to attend the National Cadet Biathlon Championships. Selection to advance to the next stage of the competition is based on performance and nomination by adult coaches and officials. Cadet coaches and cadet officials have the opportunity to win awards and medals at the National Championship. 2799 typically selects one (1) cadet coach and three (3) cadet officials. Cadets interested in joining the biathlon team can contact 2Lt David Kasper via Facebook or email. |
